U2 tribute band 'U2opia' fool fans performing live from the roof of a supermarket in Blackpool, Cork.
The prank was set up by Red FM. In the days leading up to April Fools' Day they broadcast that U2 was touring around Ireland at secret locations to promote their new album launch. A crowd gathered on the street below who believe it is the real U2.
Also in the news on April Fools' Day was a spoof article about electronic tagging that appeared in The Irish Times. The story got the politicians talking in Dáil Éireann and there were plenty of other pranks at home and abroad.
Hugh Linehan of The Irish Times comments on the placement of April Fool stories in newspapers.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 1 April 2009. The reporter is Laura Fletcher.
