A man armed with an axe has been tasered after a stand-off with police in northern England.

Police officers were called to a roundabout in Newcastle after reports of a man in distress at 6.50pm.

There they found the man with the axe at his feet and he was indicating he had a concealed weapon.

As a result the road was closed and a cordon was put in place.

Following a stand-off for an hour and 45 minutes, the 29-year-old approached Northumbria Police "in an aggressive manner" and was tasered.

The man was arrested for "outstanding matters" and taken into custody.
