A prisoner who was unlawfully at large for more than a week has been arrested and is being returned to prison in Northern Ireland.

John Clifford, 56, had been out of custody to attend an appointment, but he failed to return on the evening of Sunday 2 September.

He was re-arrested by the PSNI in the Newry area of Co Down.

They thanked An Garda Síochána for "their assistance in locating Clifford and facilitating his return to Northern Ireland."

Clifford had been jailed for a catalogue of offences, including murder, cruelty to children and indecent assault.
