The Government has agreed to provide extra funding in an effort to ensure there is physical distancing on school transport for post-primary students.

The estimated cost to operate the scheme is expected to run to somewhere between €87m and €135m.

It is likely to required an additional 1,600 drivers and buses along with 650 bus escorts.

A Government spokesperson said the ability to implement physical distancing on all services is "critically dependent upon the ability to source these additional resources".
