Foiled arson attack on Cork filling station investigated

Gardaí are examining CCTV footage of a foiled arson attack on a filling station in Blarney, Co Cork.

Tragedy was averted after a garda used a fire extinguisher from a patrol car to douse the flames.

It is understood that up to 30,000 litres of diesel were stored there in underground tanks.

At about 6.55am yesterday, an individual on a bicycle arrived at Tria Express service station.

Footage appears to show the suspect attempting to set fire to the petrol pumps and then fleeing the scene on a bicycle.

A passing garda patrol car arrived on the scene at 7.17am, and a garda doused the flames with an extinguisher.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Witnesses have been asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station.

Superintendent Colm O'Sullivan appealed for anyone who was in the area from 6am Sunday and who may have seen a person cycling a bike wearing a yellow high-vis jacket and white clothing to contact them.
