Two people have been rescued from the top of their camper van after it became submerged on the Shannon Estuary near Ballylongford, Co Kerry overnight.

The two had made their way to Carrig Island near Ballylongford and were spending the night at Salthouse point not far from the land bridge.

However, shortly before 5am they awoke to find their camper van was partially submerged.

Valentia Coast Guard coordinated the rescue operation.

Kilrush Lifeboat, Ballybunion Sea Cliff and Rescue and the Rescue 115 helicopter from Shannon Airport were also involved.

High tide was at 5.40am and the sea was already three quarters up the camper van when the stranded pair were plucked to safety by gardaí and the fire and rescue service at around 5.30am.

Kilrush RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer Charlie Glynn said: "We ask that people respect the water and check the time and height of tide before venturing out, and also be aware of your surroundings and the tide's direction."
