A man has been before the District Court in Cork charged with careless driving causing the death of a 92-year-old man in the city earlier this year.

Taxi driver Bertie Byrne, 63, of Elderwood Drive, Boreenmanna Rd in Cork, was arrested and charged with driving without due care and attention at Ballintemple village in Cork on 6 February, causing the death of Dan O'Connor.

Inspector Brian O'Donovan applied to have the case adjourned until September to allow for the preparation of a book of evidence as, he said, the Director of Public Prosecutions had decided that the case should be dealt with on indictment at the Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Olann Kelleher described the case as serious and agreed to a request to appoint solicitor Frank Buttimer to represent Mr Byrne on free legal aid.
