Clare County Council has issued a warning appealing to parents to speak to their children about the dangers of jumping into the sea from high coastal cliff edges and rocks.

It comes after a video circulated on social media showing a number of people diving into the sea from dangerous heights at the cliff edge at Kilkee.

The council is strongly advising the public not to engage in such activities known as 'tombstoning' as they are extremely dangerous and could have life-altering repercussions.

The video on social media shows six people diving off the cliff edge at what is known as the Cliff Walk close to the Diamond Rocks end of the bay. The post has been viewed more than 35,000 times.

They were diving close to the cliff inlet where the Doolin Coast Guard rescue volunteer Catriona Lucas died in September 2016, when the rescue rib she was travelling in capsized in heavy swells.

The council is advising members of the public to swim only at Clare's 11 lifeguarded beaches, or in areas that are known locally as safe, and where there are ring buoys present to conduct a safe rescue.

It said the diving boards located at the west end of Kilkee were also suitable for diving and jumping, subject to the correct tidal conditions.

Signage is erected along the cliffs at Newfoundout, Kilkee, and at a number of locations advising members of the public against diving from the cliff edge or rocks.

Irish Water Safety also said jumping into water from a great height poses a number of risks, particularly when the participants do not know the depth of the water below.
