A man in his 70s has died in a incident in Clonakilty, Co Cork after he was struck by a car.

The 73-year-old man was walking on Fernhill Road on the outskirts of the town at around 7.15pm when the incident happened.

The driver of the car was not injured.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on his body at Cork University Hospital tomorrow.

Gardaí have appealed to people who may have witnessed the collision or who were in the area at the time to contact them.

The road where the collision occurred has been closed and traffic diversions are in place.
