The veteran Cork actor Michael Twomey has died following a short illness.
A versatile actor, the 84-year-old was probably best known for his role as Miah to actor Frank Duggan's Cha in the 1970s RTÉ satirical series 'Hall's Pictorial Weekly'.
He made his stage debut at the age of 11 in a production of Eugene O'Neills 'Ah! Wilderness' at the old Cork Opera House.
At the age of 82, he played the lead role in a production of 'The Outgoing Tide' at the Everyman Theatre.
In 2013, he was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for "his unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song in Cork City" and for his generosity in supporting the development of emerging talent in Cork.
Extending his deepest sympathies to his family, the Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Tony Fitzpatrick said he was a true Corkonian and a legend within Cork theatre circles.
Denis Sweeney, chair of the Board of the Everyman Palace Theatre described the late actor as a colossus and most valued elder statement for those privileged to serve with him on the board of the theatre.
