Cork City Council is to hold a special meeting tonight to discuss proposed boundary changes for the city.
In June, the Government-commissioned MacKinnon Group published its recommendations, which included the retention of the county's two local authorities, in addition to a substantial boundary extension for the city.
The proposed new boundary would now include areas such as Cork Airport, Ballincollig, Glanmire, Carrigtwohill, Little Island, and Blarney; increasing the city's population by 100,000.
However, the inclusion of Blarney, Ballincollig and Carrigtwohill has sparked much controversy locally.
Last week, Cork County Council offered to cede certain lands, not including these three areas, to the city.
But while the offer will be discussed at tonight's meeting, it is expected that the city council will be looking for the MacKinnon boundary extension proposals to be implemented.
The city's boundary was last extended in 1965.
In 2015, the Smiddy Report advocated by 3-2 the amalgamation of both local authorities into one.
