Two men have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault in Carlow in which an inter-county GAA player sustained serious head injuries.

Daniel O'Reilly, from Graiguecullen, was injured in an altercation involving a number of people in the Potato Market area of the town just after 1am on Monday.

The Laois footballer, who is in his early 20s, was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny.

Two men, both aged in their 20s, were arrested yesterday evening and are being held at Kilkenny and Thomastown garda stations.
