The search for a missing fisherman off the coast of Skerries has been called off for the night.

At around lunchtime this afternoon the Skerries RNLI responded when a small trawler went down off the coast of Skerries.

The boat was around 100 metres from the harbour when it capsized and sank.

One man was rescued from the water and taken to hospital but another person is still missing.

The missing man is in his 20s and from the area. It is believed both men on the vessel are related.

The man who was rescued is recovering in hospital.

The coastguard, the Air Corps search and rescue airplane, the LÉ Orla, the LÉ Niamh, a number of RNLI ribs and around a dozen local fishing vessels took part in the search today.

"The large-scale search operation currently involves numerous vessels including the LÉ Niamh, RNLI lifeboats, numerous local vessels and the Research Vessel KEARY, which is conducting a sonar survey of the search area," the Defence Forces said earlier today.

The LE Niamh will stay in the area overnight and the search will resume at six o'clock in the morning.
