A former rugby coach and teacher at a south Dublin school has been sent forward for trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, charged with indecent assault offences dating back more than 40 years.

John McClean, 73, of Casimir Avenue, Harold's Cross in Dublin, faces 35 charges of indecently assaulting nine students at Terenure College between 1973 and 1989.

He was first brought before Dublin District Court last November, where the court heard he made no reply when the charges were put to him.

This morning, the court heard the book of evidence was ready.

It was served on Mr McClean and he was sent forward to the Circuit Criminal Court, where the case will be mentioned again on 1 February.

A date will be set for Mr McClean's trial before a judge and jury in that court.

Mr McClean again sat with his hand covering his face as the brief hearing took place.

He was remanded on continuing bail.
