The jury in the trial of a woman who slit the throat of another woman will resume deliberating on a verdict tomorrow.
35-year-old Laura Kenna of no fixed abode has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the attempted murder of Fionnuala Bourke on Lower Drumcondra Road, Dublin 9 on 3 January 2017.
She also denies a charge of assault intending to cause serious harm.
The jury has heard how Ms Kenna attacked Ms Bourke with a knife and slit her throat, before taking her handbag.
After her arrest she commented that Ms Bourke had worked for the Department of Social Protection and was supposed to look after people.
However, gardaí established there had never been any connection between the two women in the course of the victim's work.
Two weeks earlier she had stabbed another woman in the face with a pen at a Luas stop and was later found not guilty by reason of insanity for that offence.
The jury was told Ms Kenna had suffered from schizophrenic affective disorder and had exhibited psychotic delusions and hallucinations.
However, an expert witness called by the prosecution told the jury that in his view she knew what she was doing was wrong at the time of the knife attack.
But a forensic psychiatrist called for the defence said in his view she was entitled to a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, as she had been suffering from delusions prior to and at the time of the attack.
