Around 1,300 participants took to the streets of Athenry in Co Galway this morning for the annual Fields of Athenry 10km run.

The runners came from near and far for the St Stephen’s Day event.

The men’s race was won by Mick Clohisey, who also won the National Marathon this year.

Laura Shaughnessy won the women's race.

Both winners set new course records - 29:45 for Mick and 34:58 for Laura.

This was the 17th time Athenry AC has organised the event. The race has been going from strength to strength each year, said the organisers, and year on year more people are getting involved.
