Several units of Galway Fire Brigade are working to contain a smouldering bog fire near the village of Bearna this evening.
Plumes of smoke can be seen from several kilometres away.
Fire crews have been dousing adjoining land, in an effort to contain the fire, for much of the afternoon and evening.
A section of the Bearna to Moycullen road, close to the village has been closed to traffic.
Fire service personnel say the extremely dry nature of the bog, after recent good weather, has made it difficult to fully extinguish the smouldering turf.
The situation is under control and will be monitored to ensure nearby farmland and properties are not threatened.
