Around 20 people have been brought to safety after getting trapped on the big wheel at the Christmas market in Eyre Square, Galway.

The wheel stopped turning at 6pm this evening and many of those on board were trapped until 9pm.

Emergency services personnel used cherry pickers to access some of the cabins.

The cabs were ratcheted to ground level one by one, allowing the trapped passengers to return to safety.

The incident occurred just minutes after the Galway Christmas market officially opened, with the switching on of the festive lights.

None of the passengers sustained injuries but some were said to be shaken by the ordeal.

All of them were assessed by paramedics at the scene as a precaution.

A large crowd of bystanders gathered at the top of Eyre Square to watch the rescue effort.
