One of Ireland’s last remaining independently owned regional newspapers has been put up for sale.
The Mayo News was founded in 1892 and has been published weekly from its offices in Westport since then.
Staff at the paper were told it is being put on the market by the Berry family, who took over the publication in the 1990s.
It is understood an agent will be appointed to handle the sale process in the coming days.
It is not clear what the asking price for the title will be.
A total of 16 people are employed at newspaper, which has won a number of prestigious European design awards in recent years.
The paper is one of four that are published each week in Mayo.
The implications of the proposed sale of another local newspaper in the county are currently being considered by the Minister for Communications.
The Connaught Telegraph is one of a number of titles owned by the Celtic Media group.
Earlier this year Minister Denis Naughten requested a report into the proposed takeover of a number of the group's publications by Independent News and Media.
There will be no disruption to production of the paper during the sale process and The Mayo News will be published as normal each Tuesday.
