Members of the European Parliament have voted overwhelmingly against a proposal to give Northern Ireland special designated status in the European Union.

The proposal came from the left group, GUÉ (European United Left - Nordic Green), of which Sinn Féin is part, and was rejected by 374 votes to 66.

It called for the Good Friday Agreement to be fully upheld as part of the withdrawal agreement, but also called for Northern Ireland to be designated with special status within the EU, maintaining access to membership of the EU, the Customs Union and the Single Market.

It also called for the freedom of movement of goods, services, and people on the island of Ireland.

It was tabled as an amendment to the parliament's work programme.
