Detectives investigating the attempted murder of a man in west Belfast at the weekend have appealed to the public for information about the incident.

A 49-year-old man was shot twice when he was attacked by two masked men as he sat in his taxi in Bell Steel Manor in the Dunmurry area of the city just after 10:30am yesterday.

The PSNI say he is in a stable condition in hospital.

A PSNI officer leading the investigation urged people to "desist from retaliation".

Detective Chief Inspector Gina Quinn said it is too early to identify a motive for the attack, but the man is thought to have been the victim of a republican feud.

Republican Network for Unity, a political party with links to the dissident organisation Óglaigh na hÉireann, said he was one of its members.

Police patrols in the area have been increased amid fears of further violence.

'Shocking crime'

At a press conference at Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast city centre, Detective Chief Inspector Quinn described the shooting as "a disturbing incident which occurred in a residential area in broad daylight on a Sunday morning".

She appealed to anyone with information that could help police, including mobile phone or dashcam footage, to contact detectives.

"I know the local community are in shock, but I want to reassure the public that we are taking this extremely seriously and will maintain a visible policing presence in the coming days," she said.

"There is no place in our society for this kind of shocking crime and we are committed to finding those responsible," she added.

Ms Quinn said the PSNI "will go where the evidence takes us".

She added that over the coming days those investigating the incident "will be working hard to piece together all the available information, but we need help from the public to do this".

"I appeal to anyone who was in the area of Bell Street Manor who witnessed any suspicious activity in the hours before or immediately after the shooting to contact police," she said.
