Gardaí have renewed their appeal for information following a three-vehicle crash in Co Galway in which four people were killed.

The incident happened on Thursday evening on the M6 at Poolboy in Ballinasloe.

Gardaí believe a young child and its parents were among the four who died, while the driver of another car was also killed in the crash.

Shortly after 7.30pm, a car was seen driving towards oncoming traffic on the westbound carriage way of the M6.

It is thought the single-occupant vehicle travelled the wrong way down a slip road and onto the dual carriageway. Soon afterwards, it collided head-on with a car carrying three people.

The occupants of both cars were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their bodies were taken to Portiuncula University Hospital, where post mortem examinations will take place.

Another motorist, travelling in a third car, was taken to hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

A detailed examination of the site by garda collision investigators has been completed.

After that process, the cars involved in the crash were taken from the scene, for further analysis.

Efforts to formally identify all the victims and contact their relatives are continuing, however it is understood that the extent of the injuries sustained by some of the deceased has complicated this task.

Gardaí are hoping that the results of the post-mortem examination will clarify the situation.

They have appealed for any road users who may have camera footage, and were travelling on the same stretch of road at Poolboy in Ballinasloe between 7.20pm and 7.50pm to make it available to gardaí.

They are asking anyone with information to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 090 9631890, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

The deaths bring to 92 the number of people who have lost their lives on Irish roads this year.
