As the presidential election gains momentum RTÉ news offered the candidates an opportunity to make their pitch for why they should be the next president in a one-minute video.

Peter Casey says that he wants to connect the Irish abroad with the Irish in Ireland. He says the technology exists to do that in a meaningful way.

He says in life it is important to make a difference.

Gavin Duffy says it is important Ireland has a president who understands trade issues and can maintain diplomatic relations with the UK as Brexit draws nearer.

Mr Duffy says he is ambitious for Ireland.

Joan Freeman says she wants to build up the heart and compassion of the Irish people.

She says she has shown from her past work that she has the qualities and experience to be the next President of Ireland.

Seán Gallagher says that he will fight every day to serve the public.

He says that like many people, he has overcome adversity. He says overcoming adversity is the story of Ireland, adding that the country has a bright future.

Michael D Higgins says that the election is about the future of people and communities.

He says a voice of wisdom and respect is needed in an increasingly uncertain world, one that is committed to reaching out to neighbours, partners and emigrants around the globe.

Liadh Ní Riada wants to use the role to address the houses of the Oireachteas to discuss national issues such as the housing crisis.

She says she wants to address legislators and remind them they have a duty of care to people of Ireland, and wants to start a conversation on a united Ireland.
