A murder investigation is under way after the death of a 35-year-old man in Pallaskenry, Co Limerick yesterday.

He has been named as Willie Lynch, who was from the area.

Mr Lynch's body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination took place, which confirmed that he died violently.

A 29-year-old man arrested in Pallaskenry yesterday evening remains in custody at Newcastlewest Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Technical gardaí remained at the house all day and also called to a number of houses along the village's main street to gather information.

Mr Lynch lived at the house with his two brothers and was well known in the village as a kind and friendly person, keen on hurling, darts and pool and who also organised charity events.

He was described as a "lovely, jovial character", by local Independent councillor Emmet O'Brien, who said that Mr Lynch was due to host a pool tournament last night in aid of Milford Care Centre.

An online fund-raising appeal to cover funeral costs exceeded its €2,500 target within ten hours.
