A 26-year-old man accused of murdering a mother-of-one in Cork last April has been sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

Adam O'Keeffe, with an address at St Vincent's Hostel in Cork, is accused of murdering Amy McCarthy at an address in Sheares Street.

The book of evidence in the case was served on him today at the district court in Cork.

An application by the State to have the accused sent forward for trial on the single charge of murder to the Central Criminal Court was granted by Judge Olann Kelleher.

Judge Kelleher told the accused that if he wished to avail of an alibi defence, whereby he might state that he was elsewhere at the relevant time, then certain notices had to be given to the prosecution of any alibi witness on whom he might be relying.

Members of the late Ms McCarthy's family were in attendance for the brief hearing.

An application by O'Keeffe's defence solicitor Eddie Burke for free legal aid to cover the appointment of a junior and senior counsel to represent the accused was also granted.
