A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the murder of three people who died in a fire at a house in Co Kildare 30 years ago.
The man was arrested in north Co Dublin this afternoon and is being held at Leixlip Garda Station.
Barbara Doyle, 20, and her two nieces, eight-year-old Mary Ellen Byrne and three-year-old Kerrie Byrne, died in the fire at the Byrnes' home on Church Lane on 20 September 1987.
Ms Doyle was a sister of the children's mother, Elizabeth Byrne, and was babysitting on the night.
Elizabeth and her husband Aidan had gone out to a 21st birthday party when the fire broke out at their house.
Last week gardaí upgraded the investigation to a murder inquiry after new information was received that the fire was started deliberately.
Gardaí say they have discovered a number of strands of new evidence which they cannot disclose in the event of a prosecution, but these led them to believe the fire was started deliberately.
