London's Metropolitan Police say they are investigating the death of an Irish man earlier this week in the north of the city.

John Nolan, 70, was found on fire at Orchard Place in Tottenham at lunchtime on Sunday.

Police in Haringey were called to the scene, which was also attended by the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

The fire was extinguished and Mr Nolan was taken to a specialist hospital outside of London by an air ambulance with serious burns to his face and body.

He subsequently died from his injuries.

Police say they are treating the death as unexplained and no arrests have been made.

Inquiries are ongoing to try and establish the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

Mr Nolan had lived in the UK for many years.

Mr Nolan's nephew said the family are getting information from the police in "dribs and drabs".

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Kevin Byrne said there are no witnesses to say anything untoward happened, but the family are keen to know the exact details of what happened.

"The exact details have yet to be fully ascertained, I guess they'll come out with post-mortem. No witnesses have said they have seen anything untoward happening and I think John was spotted a few minutes before, walking along with his walking stick.

"I would like it if anyone did see something untoward happening, if they would come forward.

"I'm personally hoping that it is an accident."
