A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot dead in CityWest in Dublin last night.

The 28-year-old victim has been named as John Gibson, a father-of-two from the Lucan area.

Gardaí believe that he may have been lured to his death.

Mr Gibson was shot as he sat in his car, a silver Audi, at the CityWest Shopping Centre.

He managed to get out of the car and tried to escape but was shot again in the head.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.20pm and Mr Gibson received medical treatment, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An examination has been carried out by Dr Michael Curtis from the Office of the State Pathologist.

The Garda Technical Bureau is also carrying out a forensic examination of the scene.

A Volkswagen Caddy van was found burned out in Verschoyle Green, about 1km from the scene of the shooting.

A magazine for a gun was found on the passenger seat.

Gardaí say they still do not know the escape route used or how many gunmen were involved in the attack.

They say they are keeping an open mind as regards the reason why Mr Gibson was shot.

However, they said it is clear that he was targeted and believe he may have been lured to his death.

Mr Gibson worked as a fitness instructor but was known to gardaí and had a number of previous convictions; the most recent a drug conviction last June after he was caught with three ecstasy tablets in Swords.

Gardaí are also examining Mr Gibson's links to the drugs gang his friend Darragh Nugent, who was shot dead in Clondalkin last week, was associated with, and its ongoing local feud with a Clondalkin-based gang which has so far cost four lives.

Anyone who was in the CityWest Shopping Centre area from 8pm onward is asked to contact gardaí at Tallaght Garda Station on 01-666000 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800-666-111.
