Gardaí have arrested a man in west Dublin this afternoon as part of an investigation into organised crime. Officers fired shots during the operation.

Officers from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Special Task Force began the operation after information had been received that a person was to be shot dead.

They noticed a white Citroen Twingo van which failed to stop and collided with a garda car on Jamestown Road in Inchicore.

Two men got out and ran. A pistol with a silencer was dropped and recovered by gardaí.

The men then tried to escape in a Kia Sportage car, but one of them was arrested.

Shots were fired by gardaí during the incident, but nobody was injured.

The suspect, who is known to gardaí, is being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Gardaí are still searching for the second man.
