An Aer Lingus plane has had to return to Dublin airport shortly after departure due to a technical issue with the aircraft.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus said the aircraft, with 288 passengers and crew on board, landed safely at Dublin Airport at 17:40.

Flight EI 109 was on its way to New York's JFK airport.

Emergency services were in attendance as a precaution.

Aer Lingus says passengers will be flown to New York on the next available flights, and the airline apologises to passengers for the disruption to their travel plans.
