A man has appeared in Cork District Court charged with the murder of a mother of three who was found with serious head injuries in Cork city earlier this year.

Cathal O'Sullivan, from Popham's Road, Farranree in Cork, was charged with the murder of Nicola Collins at that address on 27 March.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution Detective Sergeant Kieran O'Sullivan told the court that he arrested Mr O'Sullivan outside Mayfield Garda Station, where he charged him with the offence.

Mr O'Sullivan replied "not guilty" when the charge was put to him after caution.

Judge David Waters remanded Mr O'Sullivan in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on 30 August.

The accused was granted free legal aid after gardaí raised no objection.

He spoke only to confirm his identity during the five-minute hearing.

Ms Collins, 38, was found with head and neck injuries in a flat on Popham's Road on Cork's northside early on 27 March last.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
