Police in the United States are searching for an Irish man who has gone missing while on a hiking trip.

David O’Sullivan, 25, travelled to the US west coast in March with plans to hike from the Mexican border to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail.

However, his family have not heard from him since he contacted them from the town of Idyllwild in California by email.

He had been scheduled to meet a friend in Santa Barbara in early May but never met them.

It is believed Mr O'Sullivan was hiking alone.

According to a Facebook page the O'Sullivan family officially reported him missing on 30 June.

The Department of Foreign Affairs have said they are aware of the incident and are providing consular assistance to Mr O'Sullivan's family.
