The Garda Ombudsman says it has received 24 protected disclosures from whistleblowers in the last three years.

The Ombudsman said the disclosures were received following the enactment of the Protected Disclosures Act in 2014 to encourage and protect people who wished to report bad and sometimes illegal practices in the workplace.

The Act offered increased protection to gardaí and their civilian colleagues.

The Ombudsman said the number of disclosures rose particularly in the first part of this year.

It said the Government has recently approved the appointment of five extra staff, four of whom will be investigators, to deal with the issue.

GSOC welcomed the appointments and says steps are being taken to fill these posts.
