Gardaí are questioning two men in their 30s following a series of robberies and an attack on a woman during which her car was hijacked.

They were arrested yesterday evening after they were pursued by armed units and the garda helicopter through counties Dublin and Wicklow.

The incident began when staff members at two garages on the Greenhills and Kennilsforth Roads in south Dublin were threatened and cash was stolen.

A car which gardaí believe was used by the raiders was found burned out on the Dublin to Wexford Road near Bray, Co Wicklow.

A short time later a woman was forced from her car on Old Connaught Road in Bray and her car was stolen.

Gardaí pursued the raiders as they drove at speed through counties Dublin and Wicklow, from Bray to Shankill and on to the villages of Brittas and Saggart.

At one point a garda patrol car was rammed and forced into a wall.

The garda helicopter tracked the car and the Armed Support Unit forced it to stop in Saggart, where the men got out and ran.

However, they were caught and arrested.

The two men, aged 34 and 39, are being detained at Tallaght Garda Station and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
