The fire service has said that 300 acres of forestry that had been at risk due to a fire in the Guagán Barra valley in Co Cork is no longer in danger as firefighters have managed to control the fire immediately above it.
However, the hill fire continues to blaze further up the mountain, and is about 4km wide.
Four units of the fire brigade battled the blaze throughout the night.
A section of the fire came within 100m of a farmhouse before being brought under control.
Firefighters say the fire, which was over 5km wide at one stage, is slowly being brought under control, but that the extremely rough nature of the terrain has made the task extremely difficult.
Almost the entire northern side of the picturesque valley has been scorched.
The fire has been burning in the Derrynasaggart mountains for almost two days now, affecting thousands of acres.
