A man in his 60s is being questioned by gardaí after a fatal stabbing in Co Galway.

The assault happened at a house on Cardinal Cushing Road, Mervue, shortly after 4am today.

A man in his late 30s suffered what appeared to be stab wounds in the incident.

He received treatment at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Galway, where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is to be arranged.

A man in his mid-60s was arrested at the house.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and the State Pathologist's Office was notified.
