A man has died while kayaking on Lough Ree.
The alarm was raised after the man, believed to be a vastly experienced water sports enthusiast, went missing between Lecarrow and Hodson Bay in Roscommon early this afternoon.
After the alarm was raised, the Coastguard helicopter from Sligo joined the search and identified the man and his kayak in the water.
The man was then brought by the RNLI lifeboat to Coosan Point where he was transferred to an ambulance and brought to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Galway, where he passed away.
A garda inquiry into the incident is under way.
