An Irish woman is in a critical condition after a light plane crash in Australia in which a British woman was killed.

The women were among four people on the aircraft when it came down at around 11am local time on Middle Island, near Agnes Water, in Queensland, local police said.

The 21-year-old Irish woman was flown to Rockhampton Hospital. She was later transported to Brisbane for treatment of a head injury.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said they are providing consular assistance.

Queensland Police said a 29-year-old British woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pilot, who is in his 60s, was airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
