Around 2,500 homes mainly in Co Mayo were without power earlier due to high winds that triggered two weather warnings.
Storm Barbara is moving across the north and northwest of the country, with some transport disruption also on regional flights and on the Irish Sea.
By early afternoon, ESB networks had restored power to most of the homes and businesses affected but pockets of outages were still present in certain locations.
A Met Éireann status orange wind warning - the second most severe weather warning - is in place for coastal regions and high ground of counties Donegal, Galway and Mayo.
Forecasters were predicting severe gusts of between 100km/h and 120km/h.
Three ferry sailings to Arranmore Island in Co Donegal have been cancelled this evening due to high seas and darkness.
Donegal Airport in Carrickfinn said they hoped to operate all flights from Dublin and Glasgow tonight but that they are keeping a close eye on conditions due to strong crosswinds on its runway.
A status yellow wind warning is in place for the rest of the country, with gusts of between 90km/h and 110km/h forecast. They will be strongest on exposed coasts.
Both weather warnings remain in force until 6pm and the high winds look set to impact those who are travelling.
Irish Ferries have cancelled their Swift ferry service to and from Holyhead tomorrow. They say passengers will be accommodated on other services.
The Road Safety Authority is advising anyone planning a trip to check the conditions before setting out.
Cyclists and pedestrians are also being advised to take care.
A number of ferry services on the Irish Sea have been cancelled.
Irish Ferries has cancelled all sailings of the Jonathan Swift fast craft and the Oscar Wilde cruise ferry between Dublin and Holyhead due to today's forecast.
The company has said space will be found for passengers on alternative sailings.
Dublin Airport Authority has said around 83,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport today.
Flights at the airport are experiencing delays of about 40 minutes due to high winds.
A spokesperson for the airport said high winds around the airport earlier had now eased and airlines were hoping to make up the time.
Some regional flights operated by Stobart Air have been cancelled due to the weather. Intending passengers are advised to check with their airlines.
