Former football coach Barry Bennell has been charged with child sex offences, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service has said.
The 62-year-old is accused of eight offences of sexual assault against a boy under the age of 14.
On 27 September, the CPS received a file of evidence from Cheshire Police relating to allegations of non-recent child sexual abuse involving Bennell.
The offences are alleged to have been committed between 1981 and 1985.
Convicted child abuser Bennell, a former Crewe Alexandra coach, is due to appear at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court on 14 December.
A number of former footballers have come forward since Andy Woodward became the first to speak out publicly last week about abuse he suffered at the hands of Bennell.
FA chairman Greg Clarke has admitted he does not know if the abuse in football was covered up by the authorities, as he scrambles to respond to "the biggest crisis" he has ever seen face the game.
The Metropolitan, Greater Manchester, Hampshire, Cheshire and Northumbria police forces are all also investigating reports of abuse.
As many as seven professional clubs are embroiled in the growing scandal, with more than 20 former players alleging they were victims, Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Gordon Taylor has said.
Bennell, who worked for Crewe, Manchester City, Stoke and junior teams in north-west England and the Midlands, has been jailed several times for abusing boys from the 1970s onwards.
