Emergency services are fighting a fire in a vacant apartment block close to Cork city centre. 

The alarm was raised shortly after 7pm this evening at the premises on Lower John Street.

Cork City Fire Service has deployed six appliances and two dozen fire fighters to deal with the blaze. 

The fire is believed to be under control, but the fire services expect to be at the scene for several hours before it will be extinguished.

There are no injuries reported.
