A body has been recovered from a river system in north Kerry amid a search for a 70-year-old farmer after his tractor was found submerged in a tidal river.

Jim Keane was feared to have been swept into the river after his tractor slipped down a steep bank and could not be controlled.

Mr Keane, who lived alone in Lixnaw, was not heard from since Monday afternoon.

A search for Mr Keane got under way yesterday afternoon after a bar at the top of the tractor, which was all that was visible, was spotted in the River Brick.

Gardaí, the Ballybunion Sea Cliff and Rescue Service and the Mallow Water Rescue Unit co-ordinated the search along with assistance from Valentia Coastguard.

The Health and Safety Authority has been notified of the incident.
