A 19-year-old man has died after the car he was driving hit a wall in Co Cork last night.

The incident happened on the R515, Smiths Road, Charleville at about 11.10pm.

Three passengers in the car, two girls and one boy, all in their late teens, were taken to University Hospital Limerick.

The scene of the collision was examined by forensic collision investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic.

Elsewhere, a pedestrian in his early 40s is in a critical condition in hospital after he was seriously injured in a collision last night in Ennis, Co Clare.

The man was hurt when two cars collided at Sheils roundabout on the Gort Road at around 10pm.

Two men, aged 25 and 19, who were in one of the cars fled the scene on foot, but were arrested a short distance after they were stopped by an off-duty Garda.

They were both treated for minor injuries and are being held at Ennis Garda station.

Two women in their 60s, who were in the second car, were taken to University Hospital Limerick, with non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses, in particular anyone who was in a nearby filling station and shopping centre and who may have seen something, to contact Ennis Garda station on 065-6848100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
