A three-year-old girl has died in hospital after she was seriously injured in a road traffic collision on the M20 motorway at Patrickswell, Co Limerick, this afternoon.

At approximately 4.45pm a car with a woman and two children - a three-year-old girl and her twin brother - was travelling on the southbound carriageway of the M20, the main road between Limerick and Kerry.

Shortly before the Patrickswell exit, the car collided with a second car.

Paramedics and ambulance personnel were rushed to the scene and had to free the occupants of the first car, who were trapped inside.

They worked extensively on the girl, who was seriously injured.

She was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there.

The boy and the children's mother were also taken to hospital but it is understood their injuries are not life-threatening.

Three men from the second car were also taken to hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
