The late broadcaster Terry Wogan has been named as one of this year’s recipients of the Presidential Distinguished Service Award.

He is among a list of Irish abroad being honoured under an award scheme established in 2011 as part of the Global Economic Forum.

Recipients are nominated through Ireland's network of diplomatic missions.

The awards recognise leaders in a variety of areas including the arts, community support, business and peace and reconciliation.

Wogan died in January and will be honoured by the BBC later this month at an event in Westminster Abbey.

Other recipients include Sr Mary Sweeney, for her role in co-ordinating the response to the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone; community activist Nora Higgins, who works with the elderly Irish community in London; and Brendan Fay and Kathleen Walsh d'Arcy, who work for the rights of the LGBT Irish community in the United States.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan said the awards recognise some of the finest members of the Irish diaspora.
