An EU Commissioner has told an Oireachtas Committee the commission is ready to publish the Apple ruling in full but it is "up to the Irish Government to push the button".

The commission last month ruled that Ireland granted Apple illegal state aid worth €13bn, which the technology company has to repay.

The Dáil yesterday voted to appeal the ruling.

Andrus Ansip, EU Commission Vice-President for the Digital Single Market, today indicated that the publication of the ruling "will provide legal clarity not only for Ireland, not only for the European Union but for the whole world".

The former Estonian prime minister was before the Oireachtas Communications Committee this afternoon talking to about the EU's digital single market when TDs and Senators asked him about the Apple ruling.

Responding to questions from Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley and Fine Gael Senator Joe O'Reilly, Mr Ansip said: "I don't think I am able to add something really new on all those arguments which were available already during this last week.

"I think the situation will be a little different when we publish this case but it is up to the Irish Government to push the button.

"The commission is ready to do it right now but the Irish Government has to be absolutely sure that we will not make public confidentiality of taxation or business secrets and so on and it takes time. It takes time.

"More legal clarity will be really good and I am absolutely this case will provide legal clarity not only for Ireland, not only for the European Union but for the whole world."
