A Co Leitrim-based medical devices company is to create more than 150 new jobs in a €10m investment.

VistaMed is a global supplier of medical devices currently employing over 300 people at two manufacturing operations in Leitrim.

Some 37 of the positions have already been filled with recruitment now under way for a further 163 jobs at the plant in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The job announcement is the second from the company in the past three years and marks a five-year period of considerable growth, having expanded its Leitrim workforce from less than 100 in 2011.

The positions will be created across engineering and production platforms and are expected to be filled by 2018.

A new Research and Development facility is also in place to assist with technically challenging projects.

The medical devices sector in Ireland has grown steadily over the last two decades and there are now almost 27,000 people employed in the industry.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O'Connor TD said: "Today we see the evidence that a rural county such as Leitrim can be home to successful international companies like VistaMed and can provide them with the community, infrastructure and resources that they need to thrive and grow their businesses."

She added: "This is a further sign of a momentum for job creation in our regions following recent regional jobs announcements."
