Around 440 swimmers are taking part in the annual Liffey Swim in Dublin today.

It was first run in 1920, when it was devised by an engineer in Dublin to show people the good quality of the water in the river.

The men's race started at 1.30pm and was won by Brian Murray in a time of 31 minutes and 29 seconds.

The women’s race was won by Jennifer Gilbert in a time of 29 minutes and 46 seconds. Jennifer’s husband won the men race last year.

Large crowds gathered on the quays, boardwalks and bridges along the 2.2km course to watch the race which started at the Guinness factory and ended at the Custom House.
