Two people have been rescued from Mweelrea Mountain in Co Mayo.

Malin Head Coast Guard said the man and the woman became disorientated yesterday evening while out hill walking.

The climbers alerted emergency services around 9pm when they could not find their way down from the mountain, which is just north of Killary Harbour.

The pair were discovered an hour later on the 800m high mountain and were winched to safety by the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter.

Westport Coast Guard and the Mayo Mountain Rescue team also assisted in the search and rescue.

It is understood the two hillwalkers were from the UK and were not injured in the incident.
