5,000 tagged and biodegradable balloons have been released in Tuam, Co Galway, as part of a charity event for a local man.

The winning balloon has been claimed by a person in Winchester, Hampshire, England.

It had travelled 640km.

Last year the winning balloon travelled 1,700km in less than 24 hours, landing in Denmark.

Funds raised will go towards the medical expenses for 25-year-old Shane Grogan from Tuam who received a severe brain injury in an assault four years ago.
